Health Visitor from Berskhire Heathcare

Assalamualaikum and very good morning to all my blog's reader.

In this entry, i would like to share with all of you the second part of health system in Reading, UK. There is a system that we called as Health Visiting Team. Health Visitors are qualified nurses or midwives and their job is to help children get the best possible start in life. Every child under five years has access to a health visitor who works with you to make sure your son or daughter is making good progress. The health visiting team are a medium for parent to get support and guide as our child grows up.

During the first five years they :

  • Offer appointments to review your child's health and progress
  • Offer advice and support
  • Get help from other people as needed
Since my family just moved in into this area, they send us a letter to inform that they will come to our house to visit Adam on 27th October 2014 which is yesterday. It is an opportunity for us to discuss with the health visitor regarding Adam's progress here. How they know that we are here? Its because we already registered for National Health Service (NHS). Just a little information regarding NHS, it is funded by taxation and granted to the Department of Health by Parliament. For certain aged of people, the services provided is free and in our case, it is free for Adam in any clinics we bring him here. That's a relieve for us!!

Around 10.15 am yesterday, a nurse (health visitor) named Helen Thomson came to our house. She is a 40 something kind lady. She reviewed Adam's health report based on the Malaysian Health Record Book, the book that we got from Ministry of Health Malaysia, She told that Malaysia have a good system in monitoring children's health. That's make us so proud to be a Malaysian. We told her that Adam not having any health problem here, just a minor flu. Adam was make a good progress, he becomes more clever and love to scream!(haha). We always worry that Adam will disturb our neighbour upstairs which is a single old lady. (Just to inform that we already met the old lady, she is very kind and she said that she happy to hear Adam from upstair because she is alone)

Helen discussed with Mrs Qyla regarding Adam's health record

She also ask about our background such as our personal details, job, whether both of us have family problem or not, our age, what we do now in UK and etc. Adam at that time so behave, he didn't scream or cried. He just play around, jumping and running. Thus, the nurse could see that Adam makes a good progress here (haha). Actually the session yesterday is more on the introduction of the health programme for children in UK, she informed us the nearest clinic that we could bring Adam to monitor his health. She mentioned that under the Health Visiting Team, there are several categories of visiting programme which are : Universal Programme, Universal Plus, Universal Partnership Plus, Child Protection Plan, Looked After Child and Child in need plan. Many information we got from Helen and one of it that in Reading town, there is a clinic that we could just walk in without appointment if we have a health problem such as fever, flu and cough. The clinic is located in Broad Street Mall where the Argos located (please refer to my previous entry "What Reading town offers you). As i informed in my first entry regarding UK Health System, we need to book an appointment with the doctor before we could get treatment. Not to forget, she told us about the flu vaccination that we could get since winter is coming this December.

She also gave us several pamphlet regarding the essential information for families. Below is the picture of the pamphlet.

Around 10.50 am, my wife Mrs Qyla left us since she had a seminar at her school (faculty). I took an opportunity to ask her about weather in Reading. She told me that five years ago, Reading was having an an awful snow until many car was abundant at the town. It is difficult time for her at that moment. Last year flood affected Reading and its a rare thing to be happened. Perhaps it is due to the climate change. I also told her that my English is not good, she said "Oh i could understand you". She said that i could learn English by speak it with the local citizen and ya i do it during my badminton session. She mentioned to me that Adam could learn English when he get around with other children here and for child it is easy and fast learning since they are in learning stage. It is my aim that Adam could learn English since it is so important for his future. Helen was a kind lady and i was happy to chat with her.

After the visiting session yesterday by Helen, there will be a few session after this for us. Personally, i am impress with the programme. Its a good medium for parents here to get the best advice from qualified nurse in monitoring their children's health and life progress straight from home for free. Not to say that Malaysia is not good in monitoring child's progress, its just a my personal view with the system running here. Malaysia will always the best for me!

That's all that i would like to share with all of you. See ya....Daaa
